Gravel & Shea mourns the passing of Charles T. Shea
It is with heavy hearts that Gravel & Shea mourns the passing of Charles T. Shea, a founding partner of the firm. Shea joined Clarke Gravel in 1967 to form what is now known as Gravel & Shea.
“Mr. Shea was a mentor to many attorneys at Gravel & Shea,” says shareholder Heather Hammond. “His broad connections in the community, his hard work and his stellar reputation contributed in large part to the early success of the Firm.”
Shea earned his J.D. from Georgetown University and an LL.M. in Taxation from Boston University. He served as an attorney with the IRS from 1956 to 1961 and subsequently as Tax Commissioner of the State of Vermont before joining Gravel & Shea. His dedication, intellect, and leadership played an instrumental role in building an award-winning law firm. A highlight of Shea’s career was winning a historic antitrust punitive damages case at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Shea also served on numerous boards and committees, including Christ the King School Board, South Burlington School Board, the American Heart Association, the Associated Industries of Vermont, and the Vermont State Employees Labor Relations Board.
Shea is remembered by long-time Gravel & Shea partner Robert B. Hemley for his dedication to clients. “Charlie would remind me that, however big or small any case might be, to the client his case was not only the most important, it was the only case that mattered,” says Hemley. “Charlie stayed faithful to the principles that underlay his success: strong commitment, intellectual and ethical honesty, and loyalty. He did it all with a cheerful and consistent disposition, even if things did not always go as planned. His passing marks the end of an important chapter in the Vermont legal world.”
